I was having a stuck afternoon. All the shophouses looked the same, I couldn't seem to come up with any new compositions or colors. I was tired - just stuck. So I zoomed in on the corner of one shophouse and decided to do a small study of the top of one of the columns. They're so hard to showcase in a regular painting, just too much detail. This definitely helped get my brain on another tack and loosened me back up. Plus, I had a lot of fun experimenting with the colors in the shadows. The bright magentas and purples were so fun to work with!

This painting is of a scene that I have grown up witnessing and always wanted to put to paint. Finally, in the last year, I felt like I could possibly do it justice. Soon I hope that I can maybe paint it bigger than 4x4! This is a shrimp boat that can be seen from Highway 278 as you are leaving Hilton Head Island and crossing onto the mainland, Bluffton. Such a beautiful scene in the Lowcountry that is fast disappearing.

In other news, my husband and I are off for the week to Vietnam. We are headed to Saigon, one of our favorite cities, then we thought we would try a beach in Vietnam - Mui Ne. Supposedly the kite surfing is grand, so we're going to try and catch a wave or two, wish us luck! My husband just finished working 55 days straight (no days off!) so I think he deserves a bit of a break. I'm happy to tag along ;).

This is another quick little flower study that I did. I am almost finished with this huge painting of the container yard. It is coming along quite nicely, but it is such the challenge. I'm also working on the series from my California roadtrip, I have a couple done, I'm just waiting for them to dry!

This is another piece from my NYC series. This was a great little daschund who was walking with his owner at one of the riverside parks on the Upper East Side. I've enjoyed painting a couple of dogs in action, but they're so difficult to get good photos of them. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that?

This little plumeria was a lovely break from all the shophouses and landscapes I had been doing. It was so interesting to focus entirely on different shapes and volume from what I am used to. I never realized how tough flowers can be compositionally - and that is before you ever try to paint them! Whoa. I especially love this flower because it reminds me of Hawai'i and the girls with flowers in their hair.

I'll be taking some time this week to get the business side of my art in order. The majority of the house is unpacked, which is nice, but I need to attend to some projects with my art that I've been putting off. If only we could just paint without worrying about the details! But one of the projects I'm working on you will notice today in the email. I'm updating the daily email newsletter and also starting on a quarterly one for more major updates. Things are moving and shaking this summer!

This is another little 4x4 study that I did. I just love the sailboats on the intracoastal waterway. I didn't get nearly enough time on HHI. I didn't even see the beach there!

Wow, finally back in the saddle at the easel. Well, sort of. I'm very much looking forward to getting life pulled back together here in Singapore. While I was in the US my husband moved us out of temporary housing into our regular apartment. I've decided that having packers pack your things is great, until they unpack. Because they insist on unpacking for damage and insurance purposes. So instead of being able to ignore certain boxes pushed against a wall, I walked into a house that had piles of stuff all over. My husband did a fantastic job of starting the process of getting settled in, but he's been working 7 days a week. So in the meantime, I get to walk in circles putting away piles of things ;)...

I've had these little 4x4 panels for forever - almost a year. I think I bought 80 of them the last time I was in the US, and they have been primed and painted and ready to go since. For some reason in the last week, as I've been a little restless to experiment, I decided to pull them out and start sifting through all my reference photos for things to paint that I haven't really tried before. Clouds are totally under this list. I've painted very few before, so this is a great chance to try my hand at them. This little scene is from last year after my mother picked me up from the airport. The sky was just beautiful. All the way from Savannah to HHI, it was blue, blue sky and big puffy clouds. This scene was as we were on the bridge over the intracoastal waterway to Hilton Head. The clouds reflecting in the water, I'll always love that view. Makes me miss home.

This was a scene I saw while I was exploring around the Wall Street area. Two people were crossing the crosswalk, and I noticed the really cool shadows they were casting on the ground. The title of the painting is a little east meets west, because over here they call cross walks zebra crossing. Don't worry, the only actual zebras here are at the zoo!

I saw this guy when I was walking around Chelsea taking photos. He just looked too happy carrying his master's paper around. It made me smile. Happy Friday!
