This is another study of my larger piece, Emerald Sunset. I love that little strip of shophouses up on Emerald Hill. They are so beautiful at night.

Happy Monday! I'm so glad I get to be back in the studio tomorrow morning. This past week has been very productive - just not in the studio. I now have at least a year's supply of art supplies. Paint, panels, and even rags. So exciting! We finally have some of our things that have been in storage for over three years. A lot of the things were our wedding gifts. It was kind of like Christmas all over again! For the first time in three years, our apartment feels like a home, not a temporary residence. Nevertheless, time to get back to the studio!

Corner Store

"Corner Store"

This was a fun little street corner in NYC from my visit there last spring. I still have so many fantastic reference photos from that trip. And as I keep on working and improving and seeing things with a new eye, I'll see another photo that catches my eye that I ignored before, or seemed to difficult. I really loved the shadows and light on the awning.

In other news (drumroll please)... WE GOT A DISHWASHER! Well, let's just say it has finally been installed. Dishwashers are a huge luxury over here. You almost never see them. But they aren't the unicorns of Singapore quite like automatic ice machines and garbage disposals. Those just don't exist. So yes, in typical Singapore fashion, our dishwasher has been installed and hooked up to the closest water line. Alas, the power cord does not even get close reaching an outlet. Why am I not surprised?

Singapore Heritage Shophouse #1 - SOLD

"Singapore Heritage Shophouse #1" 6"x6" Oil on Canvas, Click Here to Purchase
Okay, it is Monday (Happy Valentine's Day!), and I've decided I'm going to do it.  One Hundred Shophouses in 100 (working) days.  For the next 4.5 months (that's 20 weeks, eep!) I'm going to paint 100 different shophouses.  To be fair, a few I will have to paint ahead of schedule and post on a regular basis, as we are traveling a bit.  This one I was kind of trying some different methods from what I have been doing, and I think it really paid off.  I loosened up a bit, quit worrying about how exact a stroke turned out. Instead I kept cutting back into the paint or focused on overlapping the paint.  I think it really worked well. I'm happy with this one.  Off to a good start!

Keeping it Cool - Daily Painting #21

"Keeping it Cool" 6x6 Oil on Panel click here to Purchase
This is completely and totally Singapore.  Every house has at least one air con (not called A/C or Air Conditioner, take note) unit.  Our apartment has 3 I think?  So when you walk down the back side of some of these little alleys in the heritage district, the walls are just lined with air con units.  When the light hits them in the morning or late afternoon they create some really cool shadow patterns.  This was on a late afternoon near Arab St.   If you are ever looking for silk, that is the place to go!

Daily Commute No 1

Just a view of the daily commute here in Singapore.

I was very happy with the way that this turned out. The differences between the images in my head versus what I am putting down on the canvas are getting smaller.  After I finished this I felt a sense of accomplishment I haven't felt in a while.  It was really difficult to work with because I decided I wanted a cool light.  Trying to wrap my head around cool midday light rather than the warmer light you see the rest of the day is tough to wrap your head around.  And I didn't want the painting to get too cold too quickly.  But overall, I'm giving myself a pat on the back.  I think I'm going to open a bottle of wine and toast to a Happy Friday!
